When betting becomes the norm

Sports betting is everywhere—from our conversations to our social media feeds—and it can be even more prominent during games. The more we’re exposed to betting, the more it can feel like a normal part of sports, and the easier it can be to lose sight of the risks.

The many ways betting becomes normalized

Its omnipresence in sports

Cheering on your team, breaking down plays, talking about the latest game with friends—it’s all part of being a fan. From your TV to your phone, sports are always within reach, and so are opportunities to bet.

Odds, expert analysis, ads, influencer content: when betting is woven into so much of the sports experience, it can start to feel like a normal part of it.

There are many ways sports betting is normalized. Offers and promotions can make betting seem less risky, posts about big wins can make it look like easy money, and expert predictions can create a false sense of certainty.

Illegal gambling websites and apps

High visibility doesn’t mean low risk

Ads for illegal betting websites and apps can show up during games, in your feeds, and alongside the sports content you follow.

The more often you see the same names and logos, the more familiar—and even trustworthy—they can start to seem. But being highly visible doesn’t make them any safer or less risky.
