Since poker combines strategy and chance, can we hope to win with poker if we play skillfully?

Answer

The outcome in poker depends on both chance and players’ skills. But it is impossible to know how much of it is due to chance and how much depends on strategy.

Unlike other games of chance, most poker is played against other players rather than the house. There’ll always be other people around the table who play as well as you do or better. And even if you have the most poker experience, chance could surprise you.

Yet, as is the case with all games of chance, there is a possibility of winning in the long term. Although some players do win more money than they spend, the vast majority lose more often than they win.

It’s best to play poker for fun and not expect financial returns. If we only play to make money, chances are we’ll be disappointed.
